A meticulously restored 1967 Shelby GT500 with a fascinating history and original documentation is up for auction on Bring A Trailer. The car, originally purchased for $4,790, is expected to fetch a significant sum, exceeding its original price by a considerable margin. Its journey from a factory-fresh Lime Gold to a black-painted classic, followed by a complete restoration back to its original glory, adds to its allure.
A 1967 Shelby GT500, originally purchased for $4,790, is currently up for auction on Bring A Trailer and is expected to fetch a substantial sum, likely many multiples of its original price. The car, finished on January 18, 1967, and delivered to a dealership in Decatur, Georgia, was initially painted Lime Gold at the factory but repainted black by its first owner. This color scheme persisted for several decades until the car was sold in 2015.
Its second owner embarked on a complete restoration, which was finalized in 2019. During the restoration, the Shelby Mustang was returned to its original Lime Gold hue. The 428-cubic-inch V-8 engine and the four-speed manual transmission were rebuilt, and new 15-inch Magstar wheels were installed. The car was already equipped with several desirable options when purchased new, including an AM radio, folding rear seat, power steering, power front disc brakes, shoulder harnesses, a rear spoiler, fender extensions, and air scoops.Bring A Trailer notes some imperfections, including a minor accident the Shelby Mustang was involved in, resulting in the replacement of its left-front fender and fender apron. The fiberglass hood and the ram-air scoop are also not original parts. The woodgrain steering wheel is not the original one either. The odometer displays 92,537 miles, indicating the car hasn't been languishing in a barn for the past half-century. Adding to the intrigue is the inclusion of the original Shelby window sticker, revealing a base price of $4,195 for the “Shelby GT 500 with 428 Cobra Le Mans 355 HP Engine.” Standard features included an extra cooling package, tachometer, and “remote control outside rear view mirror.” Additional options purchased at the time, such as power steering and brakes, deluxe wheels, and the radio, pushed the final price to $4,790. As of Monday, bidding on Bring A Trailer has reached $152,000, with three days remaining until the auction concludes. This suggests the final price will likely surpass $152,000, potentially even doubling the original amount. Considering inflation, this would represent a remarkable return on investment. The odometer reading also testifies to the car's enjoyment as a driver, having seen its fair share of open roads
