Shortly after 2 p.m., firefighters battled a large fire at 147-07 72nd Drive and rescued 18 children from inside, according to Chief of Operations John Esposito. Building inspectors determined two commercial businesses were operating in the basement: a daycare and a dental lab. Neither was an approved use of that space, according to Ryan Degan, a spokesperson for the buildings department.
