The school year has begun for thousands more students in North Texas.
More than a dozen North Texas school districts are starting the new year Tuesday. FOX 4's Shannon Murray reports live from Sewell Elementary School in Garland ISD.Garland ISD is the largest of the 17 school districts that kicked off their year on Tuesday. It has about 52,000 students across 71 campuses.The district has partnered with Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse police to comply with a new state law that requires armed personnel in every public school starting Sept. 1.
Many districts made that move in an attempt to attract and retain teachers during a statewide shortage.

North Texas student brings gun to school, clear bag policy aids in discoveryA student in North Texas brought a gun to school on Monday, but thanks to the new clear bag policy implemented by Mesquite ISD, the weapon was found. The district credits the policy for helping to ensure the safety of students and plans to enforce it further by requiring all students to carry clear bags starting in the 2023-2024 academic year. The student involved will face disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
