Julissa Calderon might be relatively new to the TV industry, but she’s already making significant changes in regard to Latinx representation on screen. In fact,, Yessika Castillo, just for her.
Originally the creators of the show wanted a Los Angeles–born Mexican-American actor to fill the role, but they quickly changed their minds and wrote Yessika as an Afro-Latina to better represent both Calderon’s heritage and to give queer Afro-Latinas a spot onscreen.
