My age may indicate that I'm an adult, but I cannot adult properly.

As a Writer at BuzzFeed, I write and curate quizzes, listicles, and articles about everything from pop culture to food and fashion. As a newly turned adult myself, there are quite a few 'normal' tasks that I too have not conquered yet.

I do not know how to drive, taxes are too confusing, and I cannot budget for the life of me. It's frustrating, but I would like to believe that I'm getting close to learning it all. I know that every one of us acts like we know it all, but really, we don't. And that's alright. I, for one, felt super reassured after I came across these Redditwhere adults shared the seemingly 'normal' tasks that they still don't know how to perform. It is a universal thing. After going through them, I picked out the ones that make me feel completely reassured. Here are 16 'normal' tasks that adults secretly don't know how to do:"I’ll start: getting on and off escalators. I hesitate and wait for the right step to come and generally look/behave like an idiot. My grandma told me if I wasn’t careful, the teeth would catch my shoe and suck me in, tearing me apart, so now I have to mentally prep myself every time I’m in a mall." "Feeding myself healthy food. Don’t get me wrong, I know how to cook. I just don’t like doing it; it’s boring, takes too much time, and leaves me with too many dishes to clean afterwards. I live on my own and don’t have a dishwasher, so I have to wash everything by hand. I eat too many microwave and oven-ready meals that are full of processed foods. If cooking, eating, and then cleaning everything up afterwards takes more than half an hour out of my evening, I get annoyed because I’d rather be doing anything else other than cooking.""Feeding myself three meals to think about, three meals to get groceries for, three meals to make, and three meals' worth of dishes to clean. WHY?" "Making phone calls for work. I have to mentally work myself up to do it 99% of the time and still get nervous about it." "Get up on time and don't hit the snooze button! I try to sleep in complete sleep cycles to wake up with energy. But it is inevitable that I hit the snooze button for five more minutes for two hours... because I know that with even one minute of snoozing, my brain can go back to sleep and make it seem like I slept for half an hour... and then I stay in bed for one more hour every day.""The “5 more minutes” that somehow becomes a whole extra REM cycle is wild. My alarm is basically a suggestion at this point—my brain hears it and chooses violence." "I can't lie; it's washing my hair. I hate spending an hour or longer dealing with it after I wash it since I have curly hair." "Washing up. I just do not want to! Sometimes it's smelly; even rubber gloves can get slimy, it makes my clothes wet from the splashing, the water takes forever to heat up so it feels like I'm wasting it, and it takes either way too long or way less time than I think it will, and I have no way of guessing correctly. I'm only one person, so the dishwasher is too big. Things would STINK before I managed to fill it up.""Dishes are my absolute sensory HELL. I HATEEEEE the water, the wet food, and even the way the wet plates and pans squeak against my skin. EUGH!!!!" "Getting myself to take a shower after a long day. I just want to sleep. I had my mom nag at me years ago. Now I only have my spouse and myself." "Yep, laundry. I don't mind washing and drying it; I might even fold it, but putting it away takes me days and is always the very last chore I do on chore day...unless I decide to skip it and do it 'later.'""Folding laundry. Even as a 32 year old man, I still struggle with how to make clothes look clean and crisp when I’m putting them away." "Remembering directions. I used to be bad at it…“geographically challenged.” But my symptoms have gotten worse ever since I started using GPS." "Not so much for me, but a close friend seems to be unable to sort her mail. She grabs the mail in the box, reads through the envelopes, and pulls out known bills/holiday cards during the walk back to her house, but all the sus stuff and junk mail goes on her kitchen table apparently forever based on the size of the current pile. I asked her why she didn’t just toss the “non-bills” into the trash as she passed into the house and she said, “husband” may want to see the cards pitching crap like new windows, the numerous solicitations for every charity known to man.” "The maintenance of everything: cleaning regularly, making sure the car is running and everything has insurance, cleaning the machines that should make cleaning easier… and doing this regularly without forgetting it or losing the will to live.""Doing everyday mundane tasks when I feel like I'm not in a location or situation that is conducive to growth. I inevitably become a liability and don't perform at a high level like I'm used to." "I've gotten to an age where I would rather call than e-mail or use some form on a website. I just want my answers quickly and can't stand all the waiting around. If I don't call, it could take days for me to get an answer, if I even get one."I'm sure some of you found yourself nodding along with the responses, thinking,"Yeah, same." It's okay, because this was me too. What 'normal' tasks do you still not know how to do as a full-fledged adult? Let us know in the comments.
