Some 15 years ago, many New Orleanians braced for what they believed to be just another hurricane.

Fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina, ABC’s Bob Woodruff reconnects with Erica Harris, who he first met as a 10-year-old girl staying at the Superdome in the days following the hurricane.

The Ninth Ward was devastated. Harris, then 10, ventured through the flood with her mother. They caught a ride on a boat that eventually sank, then walked through the water until finding a bridge slightly higher than the submerged suburbs. They did their best to sleep. The next day, they made it to New Orleans' beloved Superdome, which hundreds of other newly homeless neighbors were calling home. But it was far from being a safe haven.

After she was evacuated to Texas, Harris devoted much of her time to helping others across the globe who'd lost their homes. In 2014, she visited Haiti, helpingIn 2014, Harris ventured to Haiti to help refugees who also lost their homes to a natural disaster."My time in Haiti was definitely one of those defining-life experiences -- in a way that also shapes who you are and how you view the world," Harris said.

A graphic released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows the estimated depth and extent of flooding in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as of Aug. 31, 2005.According to the National Hurricane Center, 1,833 fatalities are directly or indirectly related to Hurricane Katrina, with most of those -- 1,577 -- in Louisiana.

"But the city came back, banded together and made itself better than it was pre-Katrina," Favalora said.Frontline worker Pennie Favalora received food from the Krewe of Red Beans, a Mardi Gras marching group who banded together with other parade krewes and local restaurants to send food to local hospitals during COVID, at HCA Hospital and a sketch of herself was featured on their"Won't Bow Down" posters.
