Oakland police confirmed on Monday the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of Ponciano 'Chano' Tule Bernal on December 26th. The arrest was announced in a press release posted on social media by the Oakland Police Department. The juvenile suspect was taken into custody in connection with the homicide that occurred on the 1100 block of Foothill Blvd. On the day of the shooting, officers responded to the area of Foothill Blvd. around 4:15 p.m.
following a ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival, they discovered Tule Bernal, a 48-year-old man, who had sustained at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics were called to the scene, but Tule Bernal was pronounced dead. Reports indicate that the victim was shot after confronting a group of three Oakland teenagers who allegedly stole a scooter from Tule Bernal's 14-year-old son.While the Oakland Police Department did not specify the exact date of the juvenile suspect's arrest, media reports suggest it occurred during the first week of January. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has filed charges against the suspect for their role in the crime, according to police.
