'When Fantasia becomes the second American Idol alum to win an Oscar for a movie musical '

If you didn’t know, Oprah, Steven Spielberg, and Quincy Jones are among the producers behind a film adaption ofmusical, which itself is based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel and Spielberg’s 1985 film of the same name. The new movie, which is set to be released on Dec. 25, is specifically an adaption of the Broadway musical which debuted in 2005 on Broadway and was revived in 2017.
Halle Bailey is front and center in the new trailer as a young Nettie Harris, further proving this is a major year forShe’s joined by a stellar cast, including Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Albert “Mister” Johnson, H.E.R. as Squeak, Corey Hawkins as Harpo Johnson, and newcomer Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as the younger Celie.
