Kellie Parker, Rio Tinto’s Australian bosses, discusses what happens when she gets tired, why she likes puzzles and why she continually tracks her emotions.
Already a subscriber?Kellie Parker had been working for Rio Tinto for just under two decades when she received word that her company had blown up the historic Juukan Gorge.wow, what have we done? And what has happened to the culture of this company? And what am I contributing to?Kellie Parker – Rio Tinto’s chief executive, Australia – started her career in the Pilbara mines.
I started working for Rio Tinto in the mines in the Pilbara in health and safety. It’s where I started and was on a pathway to leadership and got to a point where I was working at a superintendent level and really didn’t like the look of the promotions that were coming. I didn’t like the type of work.
And I got into a conversation. We talked about what they were doing, why they were doing it. How could I help? And it was a really positive conversation. So, on a day-to-day basis, or perhaps a week-to-week basis, what do you do to constantly change yourself? Are you thinking about how you can change your temperament? Where do you focus?
What I noticed is that if I’m getting cranky with the kids, like if I get pissed off that the school bags are at the front door or their shoes are all over the place, or socks are still in the car, and I start getting cranky, I realise, “I’m too tired. I’ve got to do something about this”. Low-level sexism was definitely there, but the sexual harassment and, and rapes that were being reported.
So that was my commitment. And then I worked with our executive committee right across the globe about how we can make this change in our culture. There’s plenty more work to do, though.I’m not someone who does switch off. And I think what I do is try and make sure that I’m using different parts of my brain.
