15,800-year-old engravings reveal earliest net fishing practices from Ice Age

Researchers have determined that grid-like patterns on schist slabs from Ice Age site of Gönnersdorf in Germany depict fish caught in nets.

The discovery is all the more significant because art from the period contained very rare representations of fishing activities and mainly featured harpoons, arrows and fish hooks.A team of researchers from Durham University and Monrepos Archaeological Research Center at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie has discovered rare intricate engravings on prehistoric schist stone slabs unearthed from the archeologically significant site of Gönnersdorf in Germany .

Among these plaquettes are several engravings portraying wild horses, rhinoceroses, reindeer and mammoths. Along with these, figures of stylized female human silhouettes feature on some engravings.
