Nio set a new record with 145,395 battery swaps in a single day during China’s Golden Week, marking its busiest day ever.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has set a new national record for electric vehicle battery swaps in the country, completing over 145,000 swaps in just one day as millions of drivers hit the road for the National Day “Golden Week” holiday.

According to data from independent tracker NioSwapInfo, the company recorded 145,395 swaps on October 1, breaking its previous high from earlier travel seasons. The cities leading the activity were Shanghai with 9,670 swaps, followed by Beijing and Hangzhou .Over the past month, Nio has averaged nearly 95,450 swaps daily, highlighting a rapid adoption rate among Chinese EV owners. As of Sunday, the company’s total number of swaps stood at 87.93 million, according to live data from Nio Power’s dashboard. The company now operates 3,520 swap stations in China and 61 across Europe, showing its expanding global network.Battery-swap infrastructure expands with growing EV demandSo far this year, Nio has opened 525 new stations in China, boosting access for its growing user base. Its charging network now includes 27,258 Nio-branded chargers and over 1.37 million third-party chargers nationwide. On October 1 alone, Nio’s network handled 7,545 swaps per hour, reflecting a sharp rise in use during the busy travel week. The previous million-swap milestone was achieved seven days earlier, accelerating utilization as more Nio vehicles enter the market.China’s Golden Week traditionally leads to heavy travel, often spiking vehicle energy demand. For Nio, this surge underlines the value of its fast, automated swap system, capable of changing a depleted battery in under three minutes.Summary for 01 Oct Cumulative Swaps: 87,404,759Past 24h: 145,395Top 3 cities: Shanghai: 9,670, Beijing: 4,892, Hangzhou: 3,983Past 30D Avg: 95,450/DayTime: 00:25 02 Oct GMT+8https://t.co/oVgWp4Kp6d#NIO pic.twitter.com/FUT9qfdov3— NIOSwapInfo October 1, 2025CEO confirms delay in swap station rollout, focuses on next-gen techDespite this record performance, Nio founder and CEO William Li recently acknowledged that the company will miss its 2025 target for battery-swap station expansion. The company had initially aimed to install 2,000 new stations this year, but later revised that to 1,800–2,000. As of September 10, only 488 sites had been completed—about 27 percent of the goal.Li explained that progress has slowed as Nio redirects resources toward developing its fifth-generation swap stations, supporting multiple battery sizes for Nio and its sub-brands Onvo and Firefly.“Mainly because we have to think about deploying the fifth-generation stations,” Li said. “Our fourth-generation stations cannot be modified to support different ones. The size of those battery packs is too different. So our fifth-generation station is a completely new design.”The current fourth-generation system can store up to 23 battery packs and complete as many as 480 swaps daily, using LiDAR for precision alignment. However, Li confirmed that the new fifth-generation stations—expected to launch in early 2026—will bring greater flexibility, higher capacity, and faster performance.Preparing for multi-brand growth and higher delivery goalsNio’s lineup now supports seven different battery capacities, ranging from 42.1 kWh to 150 kWh, compared to just two three years ago. While offering flexibility for consumers, this diversity also increases the complexity of the company’s swap infrastructure.Earlier this year, Nio filed patents for modular swap stations designed to expand capacity in high-demand areas. Plans are underway for larger battery hubs in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The automaker also hit a record in vehicle deliveries for September, handing over 34,749 units across Nio, Onvo, and Firefly brands. By September 30, total year-to-date deliveries reached 201,221 vehicles, leaving about half of the company’s annual target to meet.Nio expects to deliver 150,000 vehicles in the final quarter, which would bring the total to 351,000 vehicles—falling short of its target by roughly 90,000 units.
