Jason Statham running in a street on the poster for Safe 2012
Jason Statham had a bit of a setback earlier this year, with his latest film, Shelter, underperforming at the box office. But did you know that the action star headlined a similar movie back in 2012, one whose title is thematically linked to his latest film? The two movies are tailor-made for a double bill, and it turns out that fans have noticed.
While Shelter is drawing crowds on PVOD platforms after disappointing in theaters, its spiritual precursor recently witnessed a surge in viewership on the free Tubi streaming service. The movie in question followed Statham's character, an ex-cop, as he is called upon to protect a gifted young girl from gangsters. The movie was co-produced by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch's company, 87Eleven Productions. It was released two years before they made their directorial debut with the first John Wick film. Stahelski has remained with the franchise, growing it into a global behemoth over the last decade, while Leitch has cultivated a hugely successful solo career. The two specialize in action movies, having worked in the stunt department previously. Statham's 2012 movie featured plenty of stunts and played to his strengths as an action star. The movie was written and directed by Boaz Yakin, who previously directed the fan-favorite Denzel Washington sports drama Remember the Titans and has since co-written the slept-on Netflix Western The Harder They Fall. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi Jason Statham's 'Shelter' Companion Piece Is a Free Streaming Hit His 2012 movie is Safe, which also featured Chris Sarandon, Anson Mount, and James Hong in supporting roles. Produced on a reported budget of $30 million, Safe underperformed at the box office, much like Shelter. It grossed $40 million worldwide and received mixed reviews. Safe currently holds a 59% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads,"While hard-hitting and violently inventive, Safe ultimately proves too formulaic to set itself apart from the action thriller pack — including some of its star's better films." According to FlixPatrol, Safe was among the most-watched movies on the domestic Tubi chart this week. Statham is now set to reunite with his longtime collaborator Guy Ritchie on the upcoming action film Viva La Madness. He will also star in the action-thriller Mutiny, due out later this year, and in The Beekeeper 2, set for an early 2027 release.
