Fruit flies share many genetic similarities with humans, making them a valuable model organism for studying brain functions as well as diseases.
To understand it better, scientists have been turning to a much smaller, yet equally fascinating model: the fruit fly brain.Interestingly, the map is like a “Google Map” of the fruit fly brain with detailed annotations allowing for precise navigation and study of the complex organ.
This map shows the precise location and arrangement of the 50 largest neurons of the fly brain connectome. Tyler Sloan and Amy Sterling / FlyWire / Princeton UniversityThe unprecedented map provides a detailed roadmap of the brain, tracing every neuron and synapse. Surprisingly, the whole three-dimensional map was created using 21 million images of the fruit fly brain.
They used AI and human intelligence to map the brain circuits using these images. Seung describes the process as analogous to coloring a three-dimensional book.
