The marker in Bern Cemetery and Historic Graveyard in Berks County, Pa., had become unstable and is now preserved at Kutztown University.
The last wooden grave marker in Berks County, left, believed to be more than 125 years old, will be replaced on Nov. 1, 2023, by a new, handcrafted version at Bern Cemetery and Historic Graveyard. The weathered and worn wooden grave marker has stood for more than 125 years in a historic Berks County, Pennsylvania, cemetery.the grave marker is Berks County’s oldest and last remaining wooden grave marker. A new one has been created and will be placed on Nov.
“The removal was timely, as the original grave marker had become delicate and unstable, and a heavy snowstorm blew through the region less than a week after the marker’s removal to safety,” the university said in a news release. “While we don’t currently know the name attached to this marker, we will continue to research to see if the deceased can be identified. It is possible that the individual was a Civil War soldier, since a flag marker has been placed at the burial site and the estimated time period of burial in the 1890s was a time when many soldiers from the conflict passed.
