Bee on the lookout for Denverite Vikram Raju, who wordsmithed his way into the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
“Bill’s kids”: A 77-year-old Denverite has dedicated his life to coaching spelling for free “out of the goodness of his heart”
Vikram will be the sole speller representing Colorado in the finals after Boulder’s Zoe Keith, 14, and Tejas Raman, 12, were knocked out of the competition Wednesday during the semifinal rounds, which featured almost 50 spellers out of the original 234 contestants from across the country. To make it to the finals alongside just 11 other entrants, Vikram correctly spelled the words seneschal, periphrasis, haikai, Rousseauism and golilla and was able to define the words probative and Sisyphean.
The spelling championship will award a grand prize of $50,000 to the ultimate winner along with the coveted Scripps Cup trophy.
