After over 3 entire decades and many successors, the Michael Keaton's Batman films still hold up in the modern day for a multitude of reasons.

Over 34 years since its release, Michael Keaton's Batman movies still hold up for a variety of reasons. The Batman franchise is WB and DC Comics’ most mainstream and profitable property, with Batman himself being perhaps the most malleable superhero in the genre, making his films an exciting opportunity for any filmmaker to create their own unique interpretation of the mythos.

Batman and Batman Returns Nailed The Feel Of Gotham City Batman’s home of Gotham City was typically depicted as a simple Manhattan analog in early live-action adaptations, but Tim Burton’s production designer, Anton Furst, created perhaps the most iconic vision for Gotham. Mixing various architectural styles with a Gothic, expressionist, style, Furst crafted a frightening and claustrophobic yet visually-astounding version of Gotham that was so well-received it won an Oscar.

Keaton's Batman Movies Aren't Worried About Sequels Or Shared Universes Keaton’s Batman films come from a time long before massive superhero shared universe franchises were the norm. 1989’s Batman, while a massive critical and commercial success, was not made with a sequel or shared universe in mind. Tim Burton had to be enticed to come back for Batman Returns, but even then, the film stands completely on its own .

Keaton’s Bruce Wayne Was Uniquely Relatable While Michael Keaton’s Batman had relatively little dialogue while wearing the cowl - letting his fists and gadgets do most of the talking - his performances as Bruce Wayne were fascinatingly relatable. In a departure from the comics, Keaton’s Bruce Wayne persona was not that of a well-meaning yet bumbling socialite.
