This week's trip down Vicarage Road memory lane recalls one of the most gifted goalscorers in the club's history watfordfc

Maurice ‘Mo’ Johnston’s stay at Vicarage Road lasted less than a year but in that short space of time he proved himself as one of the most naturally gifted goalscorers in the club’s history.

Signed by Graham Taylor from Partick Thistle for £200,000 in November 1983 as a 20-year-old, Johnston’s predatory instincts were the ideal compliment for the aerial talents of strike partner George Reilly and the pair were pivotal in firing the Hornets to the 1984 FA Cup Final. The striker was to score 27 times in just 46 appearances in all competitions, but he was never far away from controversy off the field and by October 1984 had returned to Scotland in a £400,000 move to Celtic. That controversy went off the scale when Johnston later joined Rangers, but for 11 months Watford fans were treated to a player whose scoring talents are remembered fondly to this day.
