I’m the author of the children’s book series The Happy Habits Club, which helps kids find their happy. Additionally, I’m a working model, international speaker, author and founder of Ready2Roar. For the past 6 years, I’ve studied how individuals pivot in their careers.
Whether prompted by personal growth, economic shifts or the desire for new challenges, transitioning to a different career path demands careful consideration of various factors. Among these considerations, one often overlooked but fundamentally important aspect is the differentiation between micro-skills and macro-skills.into a Microsoft Word document.
Micro and macro-skills represent different facets of an individual's experience, each playing a distinct role in the career pivot. Recognizing and understanding the disparities between these skill categories can significantly impact the success and ease of one's career shift.Macro-skills encompass broader, transferable competencies across various roles, industries and contexts. These skills are foundational and unrelated to specific job tasks or technical requirements.
Examples include communication, critical thinking, adaptability and time management. Listing these skill sets is weak and diminishes your resume value; everyone should possess these qualities. Think beyond the obvious. What can set you apart from the crowd? These transferable competencies are distinctive or specialized in a particular context or domain.
Micro-skills refer to the specific technical abilities, competencies and proficiencies required to excel in a particular job or industry. These skills are often narrow in focus and are directly applicable to the tasks and responsibilities associated with a specific role. Micro-skills encompass a wide range of abilities, tools, software and knowledge areas essential for effectively performing job duties.
Examples include programming languages, graphic design software, financial analysis, customer service techniques and digital marketing tactics. People tend to underrate their abilities when pivoting careers, thinking their experience doesn't apply to a new industry.Individuals can apply these skills to a new industry while advancing their careers. These skill sets may not be commonly found within the target industry but can provide a competitive advantage or address specific needs.
