12 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching The Original Jurassic Park Trilogy
United States Latest News, United States Headlines

Audiences who saw the first three Jurassic Park movies in theaters may be surprised by elements in the trilogy that they might not remember seeing.

Viewers planning to revisit the first movies anytime soon may want to familiarize themselves with the harsh realities of rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy. Comprised of three of the most successful movies at the turn of the century, the Jurassic Park trilogy pulled off the impossible by bringing author Michael Crichton's novel about dinosaurs to life.

Guided by characters like Dr. Alan Grant , Dr. Ian Malcolm , Dr. Ellie Sattler , Dr. John Hammond , and the kids Tim and Lex , audiences were transfixed by Steven Spielberg and Joe Johnston's monumental sci-fi adventures. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT However, while every original Jurassic Park trilogy movie is considered iconic, each is also a product of its time. This means that viewers today may be surprised at certain aspects of the films that they may not have noticed upon the first or second viewings. From the movies' famous visual spectacles to their interconnected stories, there are actually several surprisingly questionable elements from the franchise's first films. 12 All Three Movies Tell The Same Story A wealthy technocrat pays scientists to clone dinosaurs for profit, and the project inevitably goes wrong. This synopsis can be applied to each of the three original Jurassic Park movies. Audiences have criticized the franchise's repetitiveness as they weren't that impressed with the films. Jurassic Park III even lures Grant back to the island with the promise of money - just like in the first movie. Indeed, the most glaring of the harsh realities of rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy is that it's hard to ignore how Jurassic Park told the same story 6 times . 11 It Never Got Better Than The First Movie As the latter two-thirds of the trilogy is essentially a rehash of the first movie's plot and story beats, none of the original sequels ever matched or exceeded Jurassic Park. This isn't to say that The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III have no redeeming qualities - they're good movies in their own right. However, Spielberg couldn't outdo himself, and Joe Johnston - who directed Jurassic Park III - made an underwhelming follow-up to Spielberg's initial work. This is why some audiences argue that Jurassic Park should've been a standalone film, and that turning it into full-blown franchise was a huge mistake for its initially impressive legacy. 10 The First Movie Is Filled With Mistakes And A Glaring Plot Hole Though it's unequivocally the best of the trilogy, Jurassic Park actually has several mistakes. This includes scenes where film crew members and supposedly off-screen parts of the set are caught on camera. Hilariously, when Grant makes the kids climb the cable fence, Tim and Lex would've fit through the huge gaps between the cables - or they all could've just walked around where the fence clearly ends. However, what's truly strange is how the T-Rex managed to climb and escape its steep enclosure in the first place, as it is never shown being able to climb trees. These don't even include the scientific mistakes in the original Jurassic Park trilogy. 9 The Trilogy Popularized False Facts About Dinosaurs Chief among the times Jurassic Park made no sense, the trilogy's scientific inaccuracies popularized wrong information about dinosaurs in the '90s. For starters, paleontologists digging up an intact and complete dinosaur skeleton - that's already peeking through the surface - is unheard of and inconsistent with real fossil sites. Also, there are plenty of mistakes in how big some dinosaurs are, how they look, and how quickly they're able to move. Even if cloning was this easy to perform, there would be no viable cells from a 65 million-year-old sample, especially ones yielding an impossible amount of genetic diversity. Very few of the dinosaurs are also from the Jurassic era. 8 Dr. John Hammond Is The Real Villain While viewers remember David Attenborough's Dr. John Hammond as the quirky visionary whose efforts made the Cretaceous era park possible, among the harsh realities of rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy is the fact is that he is basically an unethical zoo owner. Despite having a seemingly endless bank balance, Hammond notably underpaid the disgruntled computer programmer Dennis Nedry, which caused Nedry to sabotage the park's safety systems. Worst of all, however, is how Hammond kept insisting on opening the park, even though several people had already died. Though Hammond did try to redeem himself, he remains the root cause of every human and animal death in the trilogy. 7 Most Of The Main Cast Is Forgettable Unfortunately, the original Jurassic Park cast is just as generic and forgettable as the trilogy's repetitive plot lines. While effectively charismatic and well-acted, Sam Neill's Dr. Grant is essentially just a paleontologist version of Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones. Meanwhile, Attenborough's Hammond is a typical power-drunk billionaire who doesn't realize he's the villain. Even Jeff Goldblum's Dr. Ian Malcolm, one of the coolest and most memorable cast members, suffers from too many similarities from Goldblum's other movie characters from the time. One of the harsh realities of rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy is that, given a completely different cast, not much would change about the movies. 6 The Only Thing Revolutionary About The Trilogy Are The Special Effects To be fair, the unprecedentedly seamless merging of computer and practical effects in 1993's Jurassic Park were unmatched during the era. These effects forever change the course of blockbuster cinema, setting the bar high for any subsequent movies that hinged on believable special effects. However, this is the original trilogy's only truly unique and compelling contribution to filmmaking. Whereas the special effects were unparalleled, everything else in the trilogy - its plot, scoring, character development, etc. - are comparable to other '90s films. 5 The Special Effects Actually Don't Hold Up That Well For modern viewers - especially those who've seen the Jurassic World movies - the visual effects in the original trilogy may not be all that impressive. From the grass not moving with the CGI dinosaurs and puppeteers being visible on camera, to guards getting violently pulled into a cage where no dinosaur can be seen, the Jurassic Park trilogy isn't as flawless as some audiences remember. Moreover, considering how the second and third movies were released around the same time as Spawn, The Fifth Element, or The Matrix, only the first movie can really be called revolutionary in terms of visual effects. 4 The First Two Are Underwhelming Steven Spielberg Movies Though the cultural impact of Jurassic Park and The Lost World cannot be denied, one of the harsh realities of rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy is that they're just average compared to Spielberg's other work. In fact, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan were released in the '90s, while the '80s was when Spielberg made the original Indiana Jones trilogy, Jaws, and The Color Purple. This isn't to say that all these other films are necessarily better than the first two Jurassic Park movies. However, considering what Spielberg already proved himself to be capable of at the time, Jurassic Park and The Lost World come off as underwhelmingly average. 3 Jurassic Park 3 Being A Monster Movie Doomed Jurassic World Jurassic Park III's Spinosaurus was a valiant attempt at replacing the iconic Tyrannosaurus Rex that served as the first two movies' antagonist. Though not as iconic, the Spinosaurus' predatory design and intelligence gave the third movie just a tinge of horror which kept things interesting. At the same time, this is also what started the arms race that Jurassic World took to ridiculous new levels with the Indominus Rex and beyond. While visually impressive, the Spinosaurus was when the franchise threw out its core humanity vs. nature/Frankenstein-inspired social commentary, just to make way for a monster movie. This trend unfortunately carried on in the Jurassic World movies. 2 The Original Trilogy Had No Conclusive Ending Although the ending of Jurassic Park III confirmed that Grant and the others survived the ordeal and left the island, the fate of Isla Sorna itself wasn't resolved in the original trilogy. Despite being initially envisioned to close the original story, Jurassic Park III had no air of finality. Prior to Jurassic World, the original trilogy ending left several questions unanswered, and this is ultimately why the Jurassic World trilogy had to be made. Unfortunately, for many loyal viewers, the sequel trilogy ruined Jurassic Park's legacy. However, this didn't have to happen if Jurassic Park III ended conclusively in the first place. 1 The Magic Of The First Movie Was And Will Never Be Replicated Despite the first movie's inconsistencies and mistakes, Spielberg and his crew caught lightning in a bottle when they made 1993's Jurassic Park. However, the revolutionary effects and the ambitious brevity behind adapting Michael Crichton's novel are only really impressive the first time around. Out of all the harsh realities of rewatching the original Jurassic Park trilogy, this is arguably the hardest to accept. From The Lost World: Jurassic Park onwards, every attempt to recapture the magic of the original film has failed miserably. This is likely going to keep happening, no matter how much money studios are willing to throw at Jurassic World.
