The congregation in Baldwin County is the latest Alabama to sue the United Methodist Church.
Guy’s Chapel Methodist Church in Bay Minette has sued the Alabama-West Florida Conference in an effort to leave the United Methodist Church.
Guy’s Chapel filed its lawsuit in Baldwin County Circuit Court on July 2, asking that a judge declare that the church and four-acre property belongs solely to the congregation and not to the denomination.The lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal maneuvers by churches attempting to leave the denomination.Harvest Church in Dothan did have the right to have its case heard in civil courts
“We are saddened by this litigation, but we are confident the process we have adhered to is fair and just,” the conference said in a statement about other churches that had filed a lawsuit against the conference asking to leave. The total of churches that disaffiliated from the Alabama-West Florida Conference by the 2023 deadline was 248. The churches that sued said they were not allowed to leave and take their property before the deadline.
