The US Coast Guard rescued eleven migrants who were stranded and clinging to a cliffside on an uninhabited part of Monito Island in Puerto Rico. The migrants, wearing orange shirts, were spotted by watchstanders and received assistance from the Coast Guard crew who instructed them to jump into the water with life jackets and life rings.
Video shows crews instructing each migrant, telling them to hold onto a life ring wearing a life jacket and jump into the water. Once in the water, the Coast Guard boat crew safely recovered each migrant and brought them onto the boat.
The U.S. Coast Guard said on Saturday, crews received an alert from watchstanders in Puerto Rico, at around 10:30 a.m., reporting a group of people with orange shirts who appeared to be stranded on the cliffside.— and saved them from the rock side of the uninhabited natural reserve of Monito Island in the Mona Passage.
“Deterring dangerous and irregular migration to the United States by sea is both a matter of ensuring U.S. border security and a lifesaving mission for those who take to the sea without understanding the hazards and perils of this journey,” said Lt. Peter Diamontopulos, Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon commanding officer. “I am extremely proud of my crew’s ability to rescue all 11 migrants from a highly dangerous environment with no food or water and exposure to the elements.
