Before many LGBTQ+ characters could be openly represented in movies, some horror films used code and subtexts to depict LGBTQ+ characters and plots.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Numerous horror movies are littered with subtle LGBTQ+ subtext and themes. While there are many brilliant contemporary examples of LGBTQ+ inclusive horror movies, this representation wasn't always so outright within the films' stories. In the decades before explicit representation of non-heteronormative characters was accepted, filmmakers often coded characters as LGBTQ+ with more subtle themes and details.
10 Bride of Frankenstein Close James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein is widely considered a queer-coded movie. These themes were so deftly included that the eponymous Bride of Frankenstein has become an LGBTQ+ icon. Whale himself was homosexual, as were two of the movie's stars, Colin Clive and Ernest Thesiger. They each give delightfully camp performances, which are decidedly arch and urbane. Thesiger's Dr. Pretorius is even introduced as a "very queer looking gentleman.
7 The Lighthouse Close Robert Eggers' 2019 movie The Lighthouse is littered with complex themes and a multitude of potential interpretations. One such interpretation highlights homoeroticism throughout the movie, including the relatively undressed physical altercations, the pair's slow dance, and their growing obsession with each other's sexual habits.
4 Frankenstein Created Woman The fourth Peter Cushing Frankenstein movie produced by Hammer Horror Productions was 1967's Frankenstein Created Woman. In it, Victor Frankenstein transfers the soul of an executed man into the body of his female lover. In many ways, it can be considered a trans allegory. It depicts a character trapped in a gender identity that does not match the one assigned to them at birth. For 1967, it's handled rather sympathetically.
