An early general election? Some buoyant Conservatives speculate that improvement under Rishi Sunak means a June, rather than autumn or winter, 2024 general election is possible 🔎 HugoGye and RichardVaughan1 report

But party sources have also highlighted the recent appointment of French-born former Morgan Stanley banker Franck Petitgas as Mr Sunak’s business adviser for helping to rapidly rebuild the party’s reputation among investors.

It marks a significant turnaround for the party, which had seen donations almost completely dry up by the end of last year, prompting fears that the Tories would be broke going into 2023., which saw dozens of ministers quit the Government in protest against his leadership, party coffers were at their lowest ebb for two years.

“There will be some very large donations from some people in the next quarter’s report, which will be out probably early June. The PM’s new business adviser is doing a great job – very respected.” The influx in cash is unlikely to do much to alter the party’s fortunes in Thursday’s local elections, with the money being preserved as a war chest in preparation for a general election next year.

“Our key priorities are [funding] campaign managers and [paying for] staff in target seats, rather than more staff in London and CCHQ,” the source added.
