During this time, friends and families would send letters to the sailors to know if they were alive and when they’d return home. In one such instance, these letters couldn’t reach the sailors aboard the Galatée warship and it was believed they were captured by the British army. Morieux spent months decoding the 102 letters which were filled with misspelled words, no punctuation or capitalization, and expensive papers from the 18th century filled to the corners.“Today we have Zoom and WhatsApp. In the eighteenth century, people only had letters but what they wrote about feels very familiar,” said Morieux.In one instance in Morieux’s findings, Marie Dubosc penned a heartfelt letter to her husband, Louis Chambrelan, the first Lieutenant of the Galatée.
