Faith United to Save Democracy has identified 10 battleground states where they believe extremists may try to intimidate voters, especially people of color.
In addition to our commonwealth, they are sending chaplains to Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. The chaplains represent diverse faiths, and all are trained in how to de-escalate tensions, counter voter intimidation, and serve as “beacons of peace” on election day.
President Joe Biden believes these elections will be nothing short of a test of our democracy. If so, it’s a test every American has to pass. Robert P. Jones wad keynote an October forum at Colonial Park United Church of Christ, 5000 Devonshire Road, Harrisburg, on white nationalism and Christians in the United States.
But the chaplain they’ve trained can’t keep the peace and protect democracy unless each one of us does our part. Each Pennsylvanian has a vital role to play not only on election day, but in the days afterwards. It could take days before all ballots are counted, especially because poll workers aren’t allowed to count mail-in ballots in advance. But we should have confidence in our electoral system. It is staffed by people of integrity and commitment to democracy.
