100 new surveillance cameras will be added to downtown Columbus in the coming months, and they will be monitored 24/7 from a new command center.

One hundred new surveillance cameras will be added to downtown Columbus in the coming months, and they will be monitored 24/7 from a new command center .The private organization is partnering with other organizations, businesses, and the Columbus Division of Police to make downtown Columbus safer.

"We have the same issues that a lot of cities have, and that’s people come here to visit, they leave valuables in the front of their car, and those cars get broken into, and those valuables get removed," said CPD Commander Duane Mabry. "There’s so much going down here," said Downtown Columbus Inc. CEO Greg Davies. "The most employees are downtown, and if it’s not safe, if it doesn’t feel right, people are going to avoid it, and we don’t want that." Davies said the network includes 100 cameras already in use at downtown businesses. The organization is buying another 100 cameras to be installed downtown. "If something’s occurring downtown, whether it be out front here, and the person were to take off and go, you can follow them in real time and provide information to officers who are responding," said Davies. According to Davies, the footage from the 200 cameras will be monitored 24/7 in a new command center in the Lazarus Building. It's funded by a grant from the State of Ohio. "Whether it’s our festivals downtown, we have very robust protest activity. How can we use these cameras to keep all the people who come down here for all these events safe?" said Commander Mabry. Commander Mabry said off-duty officers will work in the command center, and those on duty will be able to access it if necessary. "They’ve created this space to be welcoming to our officers who work downtown when we have special events, Red, White, and Boom," Commander Mabry said. "They’ve offered that space to come in and keep an eye on crowd movement and behavior." As of now, the cameras and network organized by Downtown Columbus Inc. will only cover the downtown area, not the Short North or the University District.Stay Connected
