Engineers have developed a low-cost radar that is 100,000 times cheaper than airport radars, enabling the tracking of drones below 400 feet.

As drone usage increases, managing low-flying airspace in urban areas is becoming more complex.A recent incident above the Los Angeles wildfires exemplifies these challenges, where an unauthorized drone collided with a firefighting aircraft, resulting in grounded operations that hindered crucial firefighting efforts.

This data is then converted into a global coordinate system to be shared with other ground stations, thus offering a cohesive and dynamic view of the air traffic in the vicinity.“We ensure that all the radar units are calibrated to provide a consistent interpretation of an aircraft’s location,” said Tim McLain, a mechanical engineering professor involved in the project.“This synchronization is key to pinpointing where each drone is in the sky, minimizing the likelihood of collisions.
