A Florida family’s New Year’s Eve celebration turned to tragedy after a 10-year-old girl was struck and killed by a stray bullet from “celebratory gunfire” just moments after ringing in the new year, authorities said.
Yaneliz Munguia suddenly collapsed at 12:04 a.m. Wednesday after going to light fireworks outside her home in Miami-Dade County — with her horrified parents then seeing a gunshot wound to the back of her head, according to relatives and police.
One family member, Carlos Gutierrez, also told CBS that “shooting a gun into the sky has consequences. “Who paid? A little girl. What did the girl do? Nothing.” What fault did she have? But that’s the way things are,” family member Carlos Gutierrez told CBS.”“Every time I came over, she was always happy to see me and now I can’t bear to enter their home and not be able to see her again,” he told the outlet, his voice breaking.A fundraiser for Munguia’s funeral expenses has by Friday morning raised more than $43,000, closing in on double the family’s goal of $254,000.
