While superhero movies have become an inescapable juggernaut of blockbuster filmmaking in more recent years, the genre has a deep and varied history going back decades before the introduction of cinematic universes. The 90s were one of the premiere decades for superhero films, ranging from franchise juggernauts like Batman Returns and Blade to cult classics like Darkman and The Rocketeer.
Spawn is one of the earliest cases of the mass usage of CGI proving to be so overbearing and overwhelming that it destroys and alienates other aspects of the film. It makes for a massive tonal clash against the more grounded and humanist nature of Spawn's character arc and moral dilemma, especially when further compounded by obnoxious side characters and painful writing.
While the no-nonsense and in-your-face style of Barb Wire has made it an unexpected cult classic among some fans over the years, the film's alienating tone and aggressively rough lead performance make it a largely mixed bag. The actual story at the center of it also proves to be largely uneventful and unoriginal, as, despite the initially unique concept of a fascist-ruled U.S.
Taking a more superhero and fantastical approach to a spy film is far from the worst idea out there, yet the approach made by The Avengers makes it easily one of the worst spy movies of all time. Even despite its exceptional A-list cast, the film's egregious pacing and painfully dull story make it a film that, in its attempts to parody the clichés and trends of spy films, only manages to succumb to these very same pitfalls.
