The Little Mermaid remake has some major differences from the original animated classic. Here are 10 major changes in 2023 The Little Mermaid remake.

Disney's The Little Mermaid is the newest in line of Disney live-action remakes, and it is already very different from its animated counterpart. The Little Mermaid re-imagines the original 1989 animated film with several modern twists. Some of these modern twists have yet to be explained in detail by the cast and crew. Still, from the trailers and rumors, it appears that The Little Mermaid will incorporate some of today's sensibilities into these timeless characters.

9 Flounder's Design Changed In the original Disney classic, Flounder was featured as Ariel's best friend and animal sidekick. He served as support, but also to remind her of the dangers of the ocean and the surface. From the trailers, it appears Flounder will inhabit this same role in the new film. Even though his personality will stay the same, his character poster revealed a grayish fish, which looks very different from the bright yellow and blue fish from the original.

7 New Characters Are Introduced In addition to the new character of Queen Selina, there are a number of other new characters featured in The Little Mermaid remake. Many of these new characters are added to Prince Eric's castle, such as maids and shipmates. Like with the inclusion of his mother, it was likely the filmmakers wanted to give Prince Eric a more balanced treatment than the original classic.

5 Two Songs Are Missing From The Little Mermaid Remake With the addition of three new songs, The Little Mermaid remake takes out two songs from the original animated classic. These songs were scrapped because the filmmakers believed the songs didn't move the plot along or add much to the story. The famous "Les Poissons" song that Chef Louis sings while preparing fish will be missing.
