Plenty of great TV shows have put out bad episodes, but only a select few succeed at souring the overall viewing experience of the series.
No television series is safe from a terrible episode, with some producing duds so dramatic that they threaten to bring down the quality of the entire show. Such misfires are even more noticeable when they occur on popular and otherwise beloved series.
9 Happy Days : “Hollywood: Part 3” The phrase “jumping the shark” refers to the moment wherein a TV show crosses the threshold into absurdity and viewer pandering. The term originated in season 5, episode 3 of the 1970s sitcom Happy Days, in which Arthur “Fonz” Fonzarelli is challenged to jump over a shark on water skis.
6 The Simpsons : “The Principal and The Pauper” While not quite the worst episode of The Simpsons, the season 9 episode “The Principal and The Pauper” is considered to mark the end of the series’ “golden age.” Many of the criticisms that would come to define the weaker modern era of the Simpsons feature prominently in this episode, which reveals that Principal Skinner is actually an imposter named Armin Tamzerian, who stole the identity of his commanding officer during the Vietnam war.
