Lena, played by Natalie Portman, is a biologist so her worldview is colored by science, even though the laws of biology quickly stop applying as she ventures deeper into the shimmer. It would be easy to write off Annihilation as pure science fiction if not for Lena's final confrontation with the alien and the sense that the Lena who comes back from the shimmer is not the one who entered.
