Diego Pineda has been a devout storyteller his whole life. He has self-published a fantasy novel and a book of short stories, and is actively working on publishing his second novel.

Looking great isn't a quality reserved for cinema. Over the years, multiple TV shows have proved that they, too, can have masterful visuals that convey tons of meaning. They're easy on the eye, too. One of the genres that most often looks absolutely gorgeous is science fiction—which, perhaps not coincidentally, is also one of the genres with the longest and most important history in the medium of TV.

The most visually stunning sci-fi shows are ones that have cinematography that's distinctly cinematic, special effects that age like fine wine, and other production values typical of the genre at the peak of their quality. From classics like The Twilight Zone to modern animated series like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, these shows make every frame a futuristic painting. 10 'The Mandalorian' Created by Jon Favreau Close As the biggest transmedia franchise in history, Star Wars unsurprisingly has had many TV series over the years, but by 2019, it had never had a live-action show. As such, The Mandalorian had no standard to go off of, and yet it still set a gargantuan standard. It showed that the franchise could very much work in live-action television every bit as well as it did in animation, and even if fans found the third season somewhat disappointing, every episode of the show has at least something cool to offer. For one, there's something about The Mandalorian that has never changed: It looks amazing. It makes plenty of use of the mixture of practical effects and CGI that Star Wars fans always love, and the costumes, aliens, and creatures are some of the most creatively designed in the whole franchise. On top of that, the StageCraft technology that plenty of movies and shows have used since was invented for this series, making it a historical landmark in the history of contemporary science fiction. The rest is history. Of course, it is now known as perhaps the biggest franchise of sci-fi shows, with plenty of films, books, and the like sprinkled in there. Many people's favorite Star Trek show is the second live-action one that ever came out: Star Trek: The Next Generation, which kept boldly going where no one had gone before. It's one of the best sci-fi shows of the '80s, a groundbreaking space adventure with some of the most thoughtful writing in the history of the genre—as well as, of course, some of the best visuals. Though the series ended over three decades ago, it still looks impressive. Highly cinematic camerawork, amazing visual effects, and some exceptional makeup and prosthetics are but a few of the elements that make The Next Generation such a great-looking show. It's one of the most essential entries in the sci-fi genre, a legendary anthology show with several of the most riveting stories ever told in science fiction television. Different Twilight Zone episodes had different directors, meaning that the show's visual style changes from story to story, but that is precisely where is charm and strength come from. The visual effects, sets, and costumes are consistently impressive, but the way each director uses those elements in their own unique way is what makes each new story visually exciting and fresh. The action is stylish and frenetic, the story is a blast of fun, the character work is fantastic, and the world-building expands on what 2077 created in all sorts of exciting and interesting ways. It's a magnificent show through and through. As it happens, it's also one of the shows with the most jaw-dropping animation that have come out in recent years. Colorful, bloody, and as non-stop as the pacing of the action scenes demands, the slick visual style is the kind of stuff that those who like their animated shows with endless amounts of visual flair are guaranteed to fall in love with. It can get a little overwhelming at times, but it's very much worth it. The show was unfortunately canceled after six seasons due to budgetary and low viewership reasons, but those six seasons are top-tier sci-fi television. The Expanse takes a few episodes to really pick up steam, but once it does, it's as thrilling and emotionally compelling as a series of this kind can be. The grand spaceship battles greatly benefit both from the fantastic pacing and the unbelievably high-quality special effects, and the film-like cinematography provides some truly gorgeous shots. Both narratively and visually, this is an incredible treatment of the source material and a must-watch for fans of the genre. Its themes of evolution, power, and consciousness are enthralling, and although the first season is far and away the best one, the following three are also amazing. There are plenty of things that make this one of the best dystopian shows out there, from the intelligent writing to the star-studded cast, but the visuals are a factor that often don't receive nearly as much credit as they deserve. The mixture of futuristic and classical Western visuals boosts the effectiveness and memorability of the sets and costumes, and the way the camera is always able to capture the magnificence of everything in the frame without it ever feeling like too much is admirable. One of the best ones is Legion, whose unique take on the X-Men universe has aged beautifully. For the three seasons that it ran, it was consistently praised for its surreal tone and delightfully offbeat approach to the superhero genre. Praise from critics and audiences alike also usually focused on the show's arresting visuals. The color palette, distinct cinematography, sets, costumes, and makeup are all dazzling, sometimes turning the experience of watching the series into an exquisitely psychedelic experience. Legion as a whole is definitely one of the most underrated sci-fi shows of all time. Its myriad mysteries and puzzling character arcs make it one of the most fascinating shows of the 2020s, one which is incredibly entertaining to form theories about. The creative forces behind the show are creator Dan Erickson and executive producer Ben Stiller, and it certainly is one of the most creative series of recent years. Severance is as mind-bending as thrillers come, but there's a certain beauty to its madness, and that's best reflected in the endlessly inventive visuals. The Severed Floor has some of the best production design in modern television history; the costumes aren't flashy, but they're deeply meaningful; and the cinematography is a masterclass, full of crazy experimentation but also admirably restrained and elegant when it needs to be. Severance has plenty of the kinds of shots that stay with you for days, complementing one of the most intriguing stories that television has been home to in years. Goyer Isaac Asimov is one of the grandfathers of the sci-fi genre as we know it today, and as such, Apple TV+'s adaptation of his seminal Foundation series had high expectations surrounding it. It met all of those expectations, and then some. It's one of the best sci-fi shows currently running, and if they continue to pay homage to Asimov's work as beautifully as they have so far, it's likely to be remembered as one of the best sci-fi shows ever by the time it's over. Indeed, Apple has proved that they're currently one of the best producers of sci-fi shows, and Foundation is the masterpiece that proves it. For one, its visuals make perfect use of the series' high budget, with some stunning cinematography and special effects that would be the envy of many sci-fi films of similar budgets. Everything visible on screen is vibrant and lively, helping this fascinating world come to life faultlessly. After all, rarely had any medium—television or cinema—seen animation this colorful, creative, carefully crafted, and absolutely unforgettable. It's why Arcane is also among the most visually stunning fantasy shows of all time. Sure, the narrative is gripping and surprisingly complex, but it wouldn't be nearly as effective if the animation weren't this unbelievably good. The character designs, the use of color, the design of the world, and the way the show isn't afraid to momentarily explore different visual styles to fit the mood of a scene... Everything about the look of Arcane is absolutely flawless.
