Yet it is concerts seen through film and video that are proving popular with fans. With Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo providing livestreams, the massive success of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour and Beyoncé'sRenaissance, plus A24 re-releasing Stop Making Sense into theaters, the concert film has never been more popular.
Filming a theater performance for the silver screen is somewhat counterintuitive. Using cameras to restrict or expand space can harm the intimacy that comes with live theater. YetDemme proves his mastery by scaling down the tactics he used on Stop Making Sense to seamlessly fit Gray's monologue. Sweeping camera movements are replaced by slow dolly shots, close-ups are the name of the game, and depth of field is highlighted with backdrops and rear projection.
The American Epic Sessions is not only a painstaking portrait of restoring history but also a tribute to multiculturalism and diversity. Performances by acts as diverse as Elton John, Jack White, Nas, Beck, Willie Nelson, Brittany Howard, and Steve Martin anchor the timeliness of songwriting, but also the hard work put in to nail the recording in one take, attributed to their work ethic and focus.
It's not faulty to look at Wattstax as merely a Woodstock retread. But Stuart and his crew saw an opportunity to speak about something bigger. Interspersed between musical numbers by Rufus and Carla Thomas, The Staple Singers, and the Bar-Kays is unobtrusive footage of Watts residents. Walking around, working at storefronts, driving Chevys—just living their lives in a neighborhood that seven years ago burned in protest.
