The Mad Titan shakes his hands in anger as the Infinity Stones fall around him
Throughout the years, Thanos has defeated some of his deadliest rivals in brutal ways few other Marvel villains can replicate. The Mad Titan's might comes from his godlike endurance and unmatched ambition, qualities that make Thanos one of the most dangerous beings in the Marvel universe.
Whether wielding the Infinity Gauntlet or relying solely on his strength and strategy, Thanos is a nearly unstoppable force. Surprisingly, Thanos is one of Marvel’s most frequently defeated villains. He has been killed by Drax, betrayed by Nebula, outsmarted by Adam Warlock, and beaten up by Squirrel Girl and Odin, just to name a few examples. Still, while Thanos' victories are remarkably more limited than his defeats, he still holds several triumphs to his name. Deadpool Deadpool vs Thanos #1; Written by Tim Seeley; Art by Elmo Mondoc & Ruth Redmond Deadpool vs. Thanos #1 opens in the present day with Deadpool on the ground, turned into a puddle of flesh and blood, with only his ribs sticking out. Thanos has brutally dismantled Deadpool with nothing but his bare fists, reducing the Merc with a Mouth to a grotesque pulp. Deadpool survives both due to his healing factor and due to Death's disappearance. Still, Wade is utterly helpless against Thanos’ raw might. This encounter stands out as a chilling reminder that Thanos doesn’t need cosmic weapons to assert dominance. The Mad Titan's sheer physical power and will to destroy make him terrifying even in a low-stakes battle. Of course, Deadpool vs Thanos #1 and Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, where Deadpool decapitates Thanos, aren't canon to the main Marvel continuity, but Thanos is clearly able to stop Deadpool in his tracks if Death is on the line. Phastos Eternals #9; Written by Kieron Gillen; Art by Esad Ribic & Guiu Vilanova In Eternals #9, Thanos kills the Eternal technologist Phastos with a single devastating punch to the head. At this point, Thanos has become Prime Eternal after infiltrating and manipulating their resurrection system. Phastos, one of the most brilliant minds of the Eternals, had been instrumental in developing much of their advanced technology, including the machines Thanos now controls. The Eternals are godlike entities in terms of strength and durability. The fact that Thanos kills Phastos so casually places the Mad Titan far above the level of his Eternal brethren. His betrayal proves that Thanos is naturally powerful enough to be a predator among gods, capable of annihilating some of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe with a single strike. Black Bolt Infinity #4; Written by Jonathan Hickman; Art by Jerome Opeña, Dustin Weaver, and Justin Ponsor During Jonathan Hickman's Infinity, Thanos confronts Black Bolt in Attilan while searching for his hidden son, Thane. Refusing to bow before the Mad Titan, Black Bolt unleashes a point-blank scream powerful enough to shatter the floating city and level miles of terrain. However, Thanos endures the devastating attack and smashes Black Bolt into the ground. Black Bolt’s voice is among the most destructive powers in the Marvel Universe, capable of tearing mountains apart and killing gods. Though his armor is blasted away, Thanos is relatively unfazed by the Inhuman king's attack. Remarkably, the only upgrade Thanos possesses at this moment is uncharacteristic rage. Thane Thanos #12; Written by Jeff Lemire; Art by Germán Peralta & Rachelle Rosenberg Thanos’ brutal clash with his son Thane leans in favor of the latter, as Thane holds the cosmic power of the Phoenix Force. Thane overpowers his father, but Thanos receives an upgrade from the God Quarry, and the Cosmic Coven strips Thane of the Phoenix Force. This allows Thanos to defeat Thane effortlessly and condemn him to the God Quarry. Thane inherited both his father’s Eternal–Deviant physiology and the latent Inhuman gene that awakens through Terrigenesis. This combination grants Thane immense potential even without additional cosmic power. When he gains the Phoenix Force, Thane’s power multiplies way beyond his father's. Yet, Thanos ultimately triumphs through sheer strategy. Galactus Thanos #16; Written by Donny Cates; Art by Geoff Shaw & Antonio Fabela In Donny Cates' "Thanos Wins" storyline, Cosmic Ghost Rider’s origin reveals how a younger King Thanos annihilates Earth’s heroes in a timeline where the Mad Titan ultimately conquers the universe. With Earth's heroes gone, the Spirit of Vengeance-possessed Frank Castle joins forces with Galactus to defeat Thanos once and for all. Yet, Thanos effortlessly blasts Galactus' head off as soon as the Devourer arrives, pushing Ghost Rider to switch sides. In this timeline, not even additional armor, a new herald, and a massive cosmic gun are enough to help Galactus survive his quick encounter with King Thanos. In contrast, Galactus and Thanos have a pretty even match in Jim Starlin's Thanos #4, where they exchange energy blasts that leave both cosmic villains' armor severely battle-damaged. Earth-616's Thanos may not be as powerful, but his older self surely is a universal-level threat. Thanos Rips Iron Man In Half Thanos #16; Written by Donny Cates; Art by Geoff Shaw & Antonio Fabela Thanos Wins provides a brief look at how King Thanos wiped out Earth. During this massacre, Thanos brutally kills Iron Man by ripping Tony Stark cleanly in half in one of Marvel’s most hauntingly brutal panels. In his dying breath, Frank Castle wishes he could have the power to punish Thanos for his crimes, and Mephisto makes his dream come true. This alternate timeline underscores Thanos’ natural strength and hand-to-hand combat skills. Although it takes place elsewhere in the multiverse, Thanos Wins' influence is so strong that Avengers: Endgame pays homage to it, with Thanos briefly trying to split Iron Man apart during the Battle of Earth. The famous panel of Mephisto sitting on his throne, smiling, also comes from this issue. Silver Surfer Thanos #17; Written by Donny Cates; Art by Geoff Shaw & Antonio Fabela Also in Thanos Wins, the Silver Surfer has transformed into the Fallen One after being imbued with Black Matter and becoming worthy of Mjolnir. Norrin Radd attempts to stop King Thanos with the help of the Annihilation Wave. But when he finally reaches Thanos’ castle, Norrin has to face both King Thanos and his past self, and despite his power, the Fallen One is sliced and punched to death. The Fallen One’s defeat is what finally summons Death herself, as it represents the last light in a decaying cosmos being extinguished. His death completes Thanos’ conquest and the death of this universe's last hope. To add insult to injury, the younger Thanos uses the Fallen One's corpse to power up the Time Stone and erase King Thanos' timeline. King Thanos Thanos #18; Written by Donny Cates; Art by Geoff Shaw & Antonio Fabela Wrapping up Thanos Wins, the Mad Titan is summoned by King Thanos, who has conquered all creation and seeks the final challenge of fighting his younger self to death. However, Present Thanos is disgusted to learn that his older self has lived long enough to regret his existence and yearns for Death’s embrace. Thanos turns on King Thanos and fights him, but refuses to kill him. Thanos' final battle with King Thanos is savage. The younger Thanos kicks his older self's face, almost gouges his eyes out, headbutts him straight in the nose, and twists his arm to the point that King Thanos' bones come out. King Thanos has decades of victories to his name, but the original one has the advantage of youth. Besides, the younger Thanos outsmarts his older self by erasing him out of existence using the Time Stone. Death Thanos #4; Written by Christopher Cantwell; Art by Luca Pizzari, Germán Peralta, and Ruth Redmond When Death takes the human form of Christine Collins to experience mortality firsthand, Thanos feels betrayed, as he believes that a mortal life diminishes Death's divine essence. In a fiery battle between the two, none of the Avengers are able to stop them. Thanos kills Death’s mortal vessel and forges the Death Stone to trap Death within it. This act represents one of Thanos’ most disturbing and powerful victories. Death is one of the universe’s primal forces. By imprisoning her, Thanos symbolically and literally conquers mortality itself. After so many attempts to conquer her heart, Thanos ends up turning Death into a living weapon. Captain Marvel The Avengers Annual Vol. 6 #1; Written by Derek Landy; Art by Salvador Larroca & Guru e-FX In Avengers Annual Vol. 6, Thanos singlehandedly dismantles the new Infinity Watch in a brutal assault to reclaim the Infinity Stones. Without wielding a single Stone himself, the Mad Titan kills most of the team with terrifying efficiency. He obliterates Multitude, Star, Quantum, Apex, Colleen Wing, Phil Coulson, and even slaughters Nick Fury in the process. Thanos also depowers and knocks out Captain Marvel, leaving the Infinity Watch completely devastated before Overtime intervenes. Overtime’s quick thinking saves the day, as he rewinds time and threatens Thanos with a temporal paradox. Thanos is forced to retreat, but his power is made clear. Thanos' massacre of the Infinity Watch showcases his knowledge of the Infinity Stones and his ability to improvise on the spot. If it weren't for Overtime, Thanos could have also killed Captain Marvel and all the Avengers who were on the way.
