Several movies that are 'based on a true story' stretched the truth so far that they are nearly complete fabrications. For decades, the words 'based on a true story' have been used by Hollywood as a way to legitimize and market movies and television series with the intent that the slogan will attract a wider audience.
9 The Pursuit of Happyness As heartwarming as Will Smith's The Pursuit of Happyness is, the actual true story of Chris Gardner and his son is a much darker one. The real-life Gardner was arrested for domestic abuse against his son's mother Jackie, while in the film Will Smith's character spent a night in jail because of unpaid parking tickets. Gardner also didn't use his life savings on portable bone density scanners as his character does in the film.
7 Fargo Despite writers and directors Joel & Ethan Coen telling its viewers at the beginning of Fargo that it's based on a true story, it is truthfully a complete work of fiction. The famous directors later explained that their film was a 'true story movie', not a movie based on a true story. The disclaimer at the beginning of the film, which states: "This is a true story.
4 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre The original version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre premiered in 1974 and remains one of the most iconic horror films of all time due to its 'based on a true story' marketing. It turns out that the movie is a complete work of fiction, although there are claims that it was loosely inspired by a real-life murderer named Ed Gein.
