The Far Side was designed to get an immediate reaction out of readers, and if a cartoon did this, creator Gary Larson considered it a success – yet many of his panels achieve a whole other level of artistic triumph beyond that, by sticking in people's minds and keeping them laughing long after they looked at the panel.
