Giancarlo Esposito's Moff Gideon, Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin, and Grogu edited together
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT With The Mandalorian & Grogu now well on its way, there are many different theories as to what will happen in the upcoming Star Wars movie. Little is known about the movie, aside from the fact that it will take place after Din Djarin’s adventures with Grogu in The Mandalorian season 3. It is also slated to release on May 26th, 2026, so there is still quite a bit of time left for theorizing what the movie could be about.
Because of this, it is more than likely that Thrawn will be included as a villain in The Mandalorian & Grogu as well. With The Mandalorian’s heavy emphasis on the state of the Empire after the rise of the New Republic, it makes sense that the Empire’s heaviest hitter would be brought to the forefront of the story in some regard.
Now that Barriss is for sure returning in Tales of the Empire, there is more of a chance that she will make it to other Star Wars media as well. If she were to be brought to live action in the new movie, it would make for the perfect opportunity for her and Ahsoka to meet again on opposite sides. The tension would be especially strong if Ahsoka were fighting on behalf of the Mandalorians and Barriss were fighting on behalf of the Empire, further showing the rift between the two.
The obvious answer would be that Grogu is related to Jedi Master Yoda, the most famous of this unnamed species. He could also be related to Jedi Master Yaddle, who is the only other member to be seen in Star Wars canon. It is possible that this could be revealed in the upcoming movie, either tying Grogu to one of these iconic Jedi or creating even more characters to fill the franchise.
If Thrawn were to join the fight against the Mandalorians after his visit to Dathomir, it is more than likely that he will try to steamroll over Gideon’s entire operation. This could lead to the two of them fighting, separating what would have been the Empire’s united front. Not only would this weaken the Empire, but it would give the Mandalorians an easier opportunity to fight back.
