With as long as DC Comics has been around, it comes as no surprise they’ve had a few scandalous covers. Find out which covers amazed even DC’s fans.
Warning! Some covers may contain material readers find objectionable! As a publisher that’s been in the game since the Golden Age, DC Comics has had a lot of comic book covers that have reached an iconic status. But not every book that DC puts out gets attention from critics or fans. In fact, some covers are only known for their controversial or shocking content.
9 Catwoman #0 Comics have an unfortunate history of not portraying female characters’ bodies accurately, often emphasizing certain features utilizing the infamous ‘brokeback’ pose. One comic book cover came under fire when it was solicited as part of the New 52’s “Zero Month”. Catwoman #0’s original cover by Guillem March and Tomeu Morey shows Selina leaping through the page in a pose that seems only good for emphasizing certain assets.
6 Wonder Woman #178 Superheroes go through shake-ups every now and again, but one cover marks a period of time that surprised many Wonder Woman fans. Wonder Woman #178’s cover from Mike Sekowsky, Dick Giordano, and Gaspar Saladino sees Diana casting off her old costume and civilian identity for a new, then-modern look. The cover marked a new era for the Amazon, which saw her abandon her powers and begin living a life in man’s world.
3 Batgirl #41 Yet another case of a cover that took the internet by storm before it ever hit shelves. In 2015, DC prepared a number of variants for a Joker-themed month, one of which was a cover for Batgirl #41 by Rafael Albuquerque. The cover featured a petrified Batgirl along with the Joker drawing a bloody smile on her face. The cover stirred the ire of fans who felt it was disrespectful to Batgirl’s character.
