Human Rights Watch says Mozambique security forces have killed at least 10 children and injured dozens of others while trying to suppress weeks of protests following a disputed presidential election. The rights group says hundreds of other minors have been detained by security forces in violation of international law.

Daniel Chapo was announced the winner of the election on Oct. 24, extending the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique party’ssince independence from Portugal in 1975. Chapo is set to succeed President Filipe Nyusi, who has served the maximum two terms.An average of 140 women and girls were killed by a partner or relative per day in 2023, the UN saysThe leftist party, known as Frelimo, has often been accused of rigging elections to remain in power.

Mondlane has left the country over fears for his safety, he said, after his lawyer was one of the two opposition members killed when the car they were in was ambushed and riddled with bullets on a street in Maputo. No arrests have been made in those killings. International rights groups say at least 30 people have been killed by security forces firing live bullets at protesters, while Mozambican groups say the death toll is around 50. The Mozambique Bar Association said earlier this month that it had secured the release of more than 2,700 people who had been detained by security forces, many of them teenagers.have forced schools and businesses to close and led many Mozambicans to stay home. The army has been deployed to keep order.
