Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undoubtedly one of the greatest comic book adaptations of all time, even if it does make several glaring omissions from the original story.
Despite Avengers: Infinity War sharing a name with 1992's comic The Infinity War, the events of the Infinity Saga as they play out in the MCU timeline actually follow the story of the comic The Infinity Gauntlet more closely. This six-issue limited series was the first to introduce the elements of the Infinity Stones, Thanos as a major villain, and the iconic Snap. There are several major elements the Marvel Cinematic Universe neglected to include in adapting The Infinity Gauntlet for screen. Most of these can be attributed to missing characters, who Marvel wasn't able to introduce at the time due to either time constraints or legal issues. Thanos' snap drew the attention of beings like Galactus, Epoch, Eternity, and The Living Tribunal, some of Marvel's most god-like entities with nigh-absolute control over the forces of the cosmos. While the MCU has shown off some Celestials, as well as Eternity in Thor: Love and Thunder, Thanos' actions evidently didn't register as a problem for them in the Infinity Saga. 9 Adam Warlock Leads The Remaining Heroes The character is far more important in Marvel's comics compared to the films. Close In the MCU, Adam Warlock didn't show up in full until long after the Infinity Saga in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, only having been teased in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 by the time of Avengers: Infinity War. Yet in the original story, Warlock is something of a central hero, being the major rallying force behind Earth's efforts to stop the Mad Titan from continuing to abuse the power of the Infinity Stones. In The Infinity Gauntlet, it is Warlock, not Iron Man or Captain America, that leads the world's battle against Thanos. 8 Fallen Characters Could Come Back From The Soul World The metaphysical realm served a very different purpose in the comics. The MCU did adapt certain elements of the mysterious Soul World from the original comic. In The Infinity Gauntlet, the bizarre realm functions as a strange purgatory for lost spirits absorbed within the Soul Stone itself. The MCU version is fairly similar to this, albeit with less diverse imagery, with one key distinction - spirits absorbed by Soul World in the comics could come back. Adam Warlock, Silver Surfer, Gamora, and little-known Marvel Comics satyr Pip the Troll all manage to return to reality after being absorbed, using dead human bodies as vessels. 7 Hulk Isn't The One To Warn Strange About Thanos The Silver Surfer is the herald of more than just Galactus. Towards the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, a frantic Bruce Banner does everything he can to warn Doctor Strange of the encroaching threat of Thanos and his Black Order shortly after being brutally beaten by the villain as The Hulk. This scene actually plays out fairly similarly in the comics, but with the major difference of The Silver Surfer being the one to deliver the news instead. At the time of the film's development, The Silver Surfer's rights were still tied up with Fox Studios as an auxiliary character to The Fantastic Four, preventing his use in the MCU. 6 Thanos Sacrifices Nebula Rather Than Gamora Which daughter suffers by Thanos' own hands was changed in the movies. One of the saddest scenes in the entire Infinity Saga was when Thanos tearfully threw his beloved daughter off of a cliff on Vormir, sacrificing her for his pursuit of power. In the comics, Thanos does indeed commit unspeakable acts against one of his own daughters, but rather than Gamora, it's Nebula who feels his wrath. The tone of the scene is far different from Thanos' killing of Gamora as well, feeling little more than hatred for Nebula as he traps her in a shrine and burns her alive, nearly killing her and leaving her in a horribly burned state. In the comics, Nebula isn't Thanos' adopted daughter, but rather a space pirate who pretends to be his granddaughter. 5 Mephisto's Influence Is Nowhere To Be Felt In The MCU The demonic lord didn't make it to the film series. Close Mephisto is one of the most vile and influential villains of the entire Marvel Universe, being the ultimate mastermind behind such tragedies as Norman Osborne's descent into the Green Goblin or the imprisonment of Dr. Doom's mother. Of course, Thanos' assembly of all six Infinity Stones drew his attention, the insidious demon always on the lookout for new sources of power to manipulate. Mephisto convinces Thanos to hold back his power when fighting before joining the fray himself. While the character did appear in 2007's Ghost Rider, he has yet to show up in the MCU. 4 Dr. Doom Helps The Heroes Doom winds up being one of the most significant threats to his fellow supervillain. Despite being one of Marvel Comics' most significant villains, Doctor Doom has occasionally stepped in to fight on behalf of the heroes in the face of world-ending threats that would jeopardize the universe he wishes to conquer. The Infinity Gauntlet is one such example, in which Doom not only joins the heroes in facing Thanos, but provides the Mad Titan with one of his most fearsome opponents, forcing him to stop limiting his power. Even if rumors of Doom's introduction in the next Avengers movie have been circulating, he never got to appear in the Infinity Saga. 3 Nebula Replaces Thanos As The Final Villain Rather than a younger version of himself, Thanos is supplanted by his supposed granddaughter. To provide the Avengers with a final opponent to overcome in the climax of Avengers: Infinity War, Nebula introduces a younger version of Thanos to the present day. While Nebula has a similarly large role in the actual comic, the specifics of the final battle of the series are far different, with Nebula herself supplanting Thanos as the final antagonistic wielder of the Infinity Gauntlet. Even if her reign with the Infinity Stones is short-lived, it's a shame Marvel Studios weren't able to give Nebula's villainous side a bigger chance to do some damage. Nebula's abilities in the MCU made her a valuable member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, especially since it seemed as though nothing could kill her. 2 Thanos Actually Lives In The Original Comic The Avengers don't feel quite the same need for revenge. Close Similarly to the films, Thanos finds himself giving up on the pursuit of power after using the Infinity Stones for The Snap, instead enjoying a simple life as a farmer on a quiet, isolated planet. In Avengers: Endgame, the heroes aren't content to let Thanos enjoy his peace after sowing so much destruction, unceremoniously murdering him in retaliation. In The Infinity Gauntlet comic, Thanos doesn't actually resort to this lifestyle until much later, after having faked his own death, assuring Adam Warlock he'd given up on pursuing power. 1 Thanos' Motivations Are Completely Different Mistress Death isn't mentioned in the Marvel movies. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos' plans hinge on his radical ideas of conservation, asserting that only through random sacrifice can the overpopulated universe hope to survive and thrive. In the comics, his drive to murder half the universe is actually far more emotional in nature, doing so out of a desire to impress Mistress Death, the humanoid embodiment of mortality. It's understandable why this change was made, with Death being just another character for the MCU to quickly establish, but something was surely lost in the change to Thanos' motivations.
