'Every Year After,' Prime Video's TV adaptation adaptation of Carley Fortune's 'Every Summer After,' changes many plot points and expands storylines.
This post contains spoilers for the entirety ofEvery Summer Afterexpands several storylines and changes some major plot points. With more screen time for Aurora Perrineau’s Chantal, Abigail Cowen’s Delilah and Joseph Chiu’s Jordy, an interesting love triangle unfolds there.
There are changes to Sam and Percy’s timeline and overall relationship arc as well. Sue Florek’s influence from beyond the grave can be felt strongly. Percy Being an Obit WriterMagazine, the biggest décor magazine in Canada. In the show, she is an obituary writer more aligned with print journalism.
“I was trying to think, ‘How can I get her and Sam clicked into each other more? ’ and I’ve been strangely interested in obituary writing. I l.ove the ones that really reveal who people are, because even though you’re writing about someone’s death, you’re celebrating their life,” showrunner Amy B. Harris told Deadline.
“I think that’s what the whole journey they’re all on is about, learning to celebrate Sue’s life, as opposed to just mourning her. ” Neither of these is what she planned to be, though, as viewers and readers see her love for horror unfold through movie nights with Sam and creative writing. She wanted to be the next Stephen King when she was grown up.
“I started to think, if she was still a writer, what kind of writer would she be, and I don’t think it’s necessarily a dead-end job to be an obituary writer, but I think for someone who thought they were going to be female Stephen King, it isn’t the dream, right? ” Harris added.
“It’s not the version of writing she thought she was going to be doing, and so what I loved about it is it gives her a chance to get closer to Sam, but it’s also about, ‘Okay, she has a good job, and it’s paying, and it’s out of the newspaper, and the obituaries always exist, but it’s also not her dream, and she has to figure out how to get back to that, so it is a dead-end job for her, no pun intended, as I just said that, but it is not taking her to the place where she’s getting to use her voice the way she wants to.
”In a flashback to much younger versions of Percy, Sam and Charlie, the trio were playing a game of truth or dare with Percy’s childhood best friend Delilah, who dares Sam to kiss Percy. In the book, Charlie ends up taking the opportunity to smooch his brother’s longtime crush and friend. In the show, though, while at first it looks like Charlie will act on the moment, he fakes Percy out and doesn’t end up kissing her.
In the book, Sam and Delilah end up at Queen’s University in Kingston while Percy attends the University of Toronto, where both her parents teach, for college. In the show, Percy also hails from Seattle instead of Canada, and she chooses the University of Washington for college while Sam may cross paths with another fictional summer boy (Conrad Fisher portrayed by Christopher Briney inDelilah, in the show, also ends up married to a mysterious Whit and becomes more of a permanent fixture in Barry’s Bay after she first visits the small lakeside town because of Percy.
With the college plot point removed, Percy and Delilah losing touch happens for a different reason. Chantal, Jordie and Delilah have all been “built out” for the show in the words of showrunner Amy B. Harris, and in addition to Chantal visiting Barry’s Bay with Percy, which adds a new wrinkle to the show, she also realizes some things about what she wants in a romantic partner.
Enter Jordie, who stayed behind in the town to run the Bay Breeze Motel. Delilah was his first love in the show. Chantal does not go with Percy to Barry’s Bay in the book, but she does support her adult bestie from afar via text. Now that Delilah lives in what Percy refers to as a “McMansion” in the show, she participates in remodeling the town to her more expensive taste.
She and Charlie have a secret agreement that she will buy the Tavern from the brothers now that their mother is gone and neither of them want to take it over. None of this happens in the book. Neither does Sue’s leaving the Tavern to Percy in her will.
This begets a dramatic reading of Sue’s last will and testament to Percy and the Florek boys, resulting in Percy getting the keys to the establishment and Charlie, followed by Sam, storming out of the room. Going off of the above, readers of the book may think the wedding ring that Percy finds in Sam’s bedroom is from his past proposal to her, but that doesn’t take place in the show, and the ring is actually for Roan Curtis’ Taylor, Sam’s girlfriend in the present, older timeline.
Sam breaks up with Taylor shortly after Percy comes back to Barry’s Bay in the book, but he takes the next big step with her in the show, or he tries to. In the book, Sam already had an idea of what went down between Percy and his older brother that sent them both running away from Barry’s Bay.
In the show, though, this was changed, and Sam’s reaction to the news that Percy slept with Charlie unfolds in real time.
“For television, seeing visceral response to it was so important because it’s dramatic and emotional, and it makes Percy have to stand up and tell the truth, which is what she did in the book, but she’s standing up here, and the reaction is not, ‘It’s okay. ’ It’s actually a huge betrayal,” Harris said.
“It breaks up his relationship with his brother and with Percy, and I think to be able to tell that story in a way that really gave Sam … You want it to be in the present. And then it really allowed us to play for the next episodes after that with the drama of how that’s unfolding. ” Sam takes a lot of anger out on Charlie.
Michael Bradway, who plays Sam’s older brother, liked the change because it “raised the stakes” for the cast as actors. Should the show get renewed, Sam and Percy will still have work to do in coming back together as a couple. ”Prime Video “If we’re lucky enough to have a season two, they’re not settled, right?
He still has feelings about what happened between them, and I think that is going to make their relationship complicated in the best way, and her guilt still should. They’re working through it. It’s not a happy ending per se yet,” Harris said.
“I think they still have a lot of emotions and issues to work through, and I think that’s what I don’t see as much on TV that I am really interested in exploring. After you get your happy ending, it’s really just the beginning of a relationship, and relationships are not static, they’re constantly changing, and good things can happen to you, or bad things can happen to you, that are exterior from your relationship, and I really want to explore the challenges of being in a couple.
”Delilah’s past pregnancy and, later, abortion is an example of how her storyline expands in the show, and it comes at an inopportune time when Sam and Percy want to have sex for the first time, which also does not occur in Fortune’s novel. In the sixth episode, titled “Plan B,” Percy reflects back on her friendship with Delilah after they stopped talking for a while, and this memory comes to mind. Alice Everly alert!
