With the October debut of a new Transformers series as part of Skybound's Energon Universe, now is a great time to look back at the rich history of Transformers comics. Ranging across many publishers, authors, and reboots, Transformers stories are notable for taking characters and concepts from previous iterations and giving them fresh spins in modern stories. This creates an evolving lore of great depth despite originating as nothing more than advertising for toys.
9 The War Within by Simon Furman and Don Figueroa Simon Furman returns to Transformers in 2002 to tell a story from the early years of the Transformers conflict. After the death of the previous Prime, a young Optimus is chosen as the new leader of the Autobots to fight the near unstoppable Decepticons led by Megatron.
6 Spotlight: Megatron by Nick Roche Rounding out the Nick Roche entries on the list, Spotlight: Megatron sees Megatron rebuilt after a defeat three years prior, only to find the Decepticons decrepit and marooned under the leadership of his former lieutenant and longtime rival, Starscream. Roche writes a delightfully wicked internal monologue for Megatron, and perfectly depicts the voices, inner workings, and constant contention of the Decepticons’ leadership, all in the span of one issue.
3 More Than Meets the Eye and Lost Light by James Roberts Spinning out of the end of the war in Chaos, More Than Meets the Eye sees Rodimus leading a group of Transformers on a quest into the far reaches of space. Building on story elements from Last Stand of the Wreckers and Chaos Theory, writer James Roberts examines the purpose of these characters without a war that has come to define them.
