Boris (Stellan Skarsgård) and Valery (Jared Harris) stand outside in 'Chernobyl.'
Limited series, or miniseries, have been produced for decades mainly because they allow creatives to create a small, self-contained series without committing to five or more seasons. It is also how many large film directors have dipped their toes into the world of television, allowing themselves to expand their ideas from a single two-hour film to a multi-episode miniseries.
Of course, not all limited series have been able to capture the attention of broad audiences or were critically acclaimed. However, those who have achieved this have been recognized and remembered for crafting an unforgettable story in just four or eight episodes. Looking at IMDB’s Top 250 TV Shows list, many miniseries are featured on the list and have established themselves as the best of the best. 10 'It’s a Sin' Besides creating Queer as Folk and serving as the showrunner and head writer for Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies has been the creative genius behind multiple incredible scripted miniseries, one of which is British Channel 4’s It’s a Sin. Running over five episodes, the British drama miniseries follows a group of gay men living through the HIV/AIDS crisis. Spanning a decade, we watch how the crisis impacts the friend group. It’s a Sin became a smash for Channel 4, becoming the channel’s biggest drama launch. It also went on to receive the most nominations at the 2022 British Academy Television Awards. It received universal acclaim, particularly for its accurate portrayal of the HIV/AIDS crisis, as well as the writing and strong performances by the actors. Besides the young friend group, the cast also included actor veterans like Neil Patrick Harris and Stephen Fry. 9 ‘1883’ Airing on Paramount+, 1883 ran for a short 10 episodes and acts as a prequel to the massively popular neo-Western Paramount drama Yellowstone. 1883 is the first of two prequels released so far in the Yellowstone franchise and takes place chronologically before the second prequel, 1923. One of the co-creators behind Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan, created, wrote, and co-directed 1883. The Western drama also boasts an impressive cast, including Sam Elliott, as well as country stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. The series was praised for depicting Western expansion without rose-colored glasses. 1883 is a grim, dark, slow-paced drama led by a powerful performance by Elliott. Critics also pointed out the show’s historical accuracy. Unlike the second prequel, 1923, which ran for two seasons, 1883 is a miniseries and only ran for one season. 8 ‘Over the Garden Wall’ Over the Garden Wall is the only animated series in the Top 10 scripted miniseries. This dark fantasy show, which aired on Cartoon Network, was the network's first miniseries. The creator, Patrick McHale, pitched the series in the early 2000s, but after working on other Cartoon Network projects, such as The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Adventure Time, the network was willing to collaborate on his own project. The pitch turned into a 10-episode miniseries, and the animated show’s success led to the creation of a comic and graphic novel series. At the Emmys, Over the Garden Wall received the Outstanding Animated Program award. The show’s premise is fairly simple: two brothers, Wirt and Greg , get lost in the woods and have to find their way home. However, things may not seem as easy as they initially appear. Along with the unique aesthetic, Over the Garden Wall is witty and weird in the best way. 7 ‘I, Claudius’ BBC’s I, Claudius was an adaptation of Robert Graves' 1934 novel of the same name and its sequel. The 12-episode miniseries was written by Jack Pullman and directed by Herbert Wise. The historical drama is a depiction of the Early Roman Empire narrated by an elderly Emperor Claudius . In addition to Jacobi, the cast also includes Siân Phillips, Brian Blessed, George Baker, and John Hurt. Despite being set in the 1970s, I, Claudius remains on “Best-of” lists for British shows, and even all shows in general. The series had a massive audience in the UK and went on to win awards in both the UK and the US, including an Emmy. The drama-filled source material, a great script, and a group of incredible actors have helped establish the series as one of the greats. 6 ‘Pride and Prejudice’ One of the most popular books to be adapted for television is the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice. The Jane Austen novel was adapted into a six-part miniseries that eventually became a cultural phenomenon. Led by Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, the adaptation proved to be a smash success. The series was BAFTA and Emmy-nominated, earning a Peabody Award as well. Fans and critics loved the miniseries’ faithful adaptation, as well as how it still added freshness to the source material. It led to a type of ‘Austen-mania,’ with multiple adaptations of other Austen books, such as Emma and Sense and Sensibility, being released. Thanks to this role, Firth skyrocketed into stardom. Pride and Prejudice inspired Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones novels, in which Firth starred in the role inspired by Mr. Darcy. 5 ‘When They See Us’ Based on the story of the Central Park jogger case, the acclaimed Ava DuVernay created, directed, and co-wrote the miniseries, When They See Us. The real-life case is when five Black and Latino men were falsely accused of assaulting and raping a white woman who was jogging in Central Park. The five men were initially known as the Central Park Five, but after being found not guilty many years later, they have become known as the Exonerated Five. The five men were portrayed by Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris, Ethan Herisse, Jharrel Jerome, and Marquis Rodriguez. These five actors were primarily newcomers, but the cast also included established actors such as Vera Farmiga, Felicity Huffman, and Niecy Nash. The actors’ performance and the show’s writing received universal acclaim, garnering the miniseries 11 Emmy nominations. Despite only running for four episodes, When They See Us leaves a lasting impact on viewers. 4 ‘Dekalog’ Dekalog is on this list, but it’s probably a bit gray because this miniseries is composed of ten one-hour films. Some view it as a film miniseries, while others still consider it a television miniseries. Regardless, it would be a crime not to include it among the best scripted miniseries. Inspired by the Ten Commandments, each of the ten films follows characters living in a Polish housing project and dealing with one or several ethical dilemmas. Co-written and directed in its entirety by Krzysztof Kieślowski, the 10-parter premiered in its entirety at the 46th Venice International Film Festival. The miniseries shattered expectations of what people understood, was created for television, and was seen as the best work of art for television. It was so well-renowned that Stanley Kubrick himself praised the series. 3 ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’ Based on a true story, Scam 1992 – The Harshad Mehta Story premiered on Indian streaming platform Sony LIV in 2020. This biographical thriller recounts the story of the 1992 Indian stock market scam, in which stockbroker Harshad Mehta and others manipulated the market, defrauding millions of dollars. The miniseries is based on the book written by Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu, which details the scam. After its launch, Scam 1992 – The Harshad Mehta Story became the most-watched streaming series on the platform. It was so successful that the streaming platform ordered another series in the franchise, focusing on the 2003 Stamp Paper Scam. The 10-episode Hindi-language miniseries was lauded for the cast’s impressive performances and the depiction of multidimensional characters, rather than portraying anyone as just bad. 2 ‘Chernobyl’ After working on mostly comedic films, such as Scary Movie 4 and The Hangover Part II, Craig Mazin pivoted into dramatic work, creating and writing HBO’s gripping miniseries, Chernobyl. This historical drama covers the Chernobyl disaster and its aftermath. The series aired simultaneously in the UK on Sky UK and in the US on HBO. The ensemble cast was led by Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson, Jared Harris, and Paul Ritter. The actors delivered a remarkable performance, and Chernobyl’s writing and historical accuracy received praise. The show received mixed reviews from Russia, but much of the Ukrainian media applauded the show for depicting a tragic story that highlighted the heroics of ordinary people. Its success led to 19 Emmy nominations with 10 wins, including one for Outstanding Limited Series. 1 ‘Band of Brothers’ HBO doesn’t only hold the spot for the second-best scripted miniseries on the list, but also the top spot. 2001’s Band of Brothers has stood the test of time and is still regarded as one of the best shows of all time. The war drama was created by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg and was based on Stephen E. Ambrose's book. The historical miniseries depicts the World War 2 experiences of the"Easy" Company. With a budget of $125 million and ten episodes, it helped establish HBO as a leading producer of high-quality television. The series features a large ensemble cast and was the most expensive TV miniseries ever made up to that point. Plenty of research was conducted to ensure historical accuracy was achieved, which eventually earned the series a Peabody Award. In addition, Band of Brothers received 20 Emmy nominations and won seven of them.
