Jeremy Urquhart is a writer at Collider who focuses on the Godzilla series, the films of Martin Scorsese, and anything in the action genre.

Looking through a ranking of the best movies of all time is inevitably going to result in the rounding up of some usual suspects. You can probably rest easy that you’ve seen most, if not all, of these, or if not, then you’ve surely heard of them; they might well be on your watchlist. Think of things along the lines of Citizen Kane, The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Lord of the Rings… nothing surprising, but nothing controversial, either.

9 'Dillinger' Directed by Max Nosseck Dillinger has kind of been buried under all the other acclaimed gangster films of its era, and there were many, given how great the 1930s and 1940s, as decades, were for this kind of crime flick. As the title suggests, this one is all about John Dillinger, who became public enemy number one in America for a time in the early 1930s, thanks to leading a gang that robbed a series of banks.

6 'The Lighthorsemen' Directed by Simon Wincer The most well-known Australian film about World War I released in the 1980s was almost certainly Gallipoli, and that one itself is kind of underappreciated outside Australia. But The Lighthorsemen is another film that can be defined in such a way, and this one is even more underrated, despite convincingly recreating the time at which it was set while showcasing some impressive battle sequences.

Powered by Expand Collapse 5 'A Trap' Directed by Yoji Yamada While it’s not quite a thriller, A Trap does come close, ultimately functioning as a very under-appreciated crime/drama/mystery film. Things kick off with a sister trying to get help for her older brother after he’s arrested and put on trial, with her lack of success with finding a lawyer pushing her to slowly but surely take matters into her own hands. Eventually, revenge is involved, too.

Selecting the Best: Why 'Best of the Best' Hiring May BackfireSelecting the Best: Why 'Best of the Best' Hiring May BackfireResearch suggests that multi-step processes for selecting the most creative individuals or ideas may be inefficient and unreliable. Experts often struggle to distinguish clear winners among finalists. A more effective approach might involve broader talent criteria, focusing on diversity and cultural fit, early expert involvement, and creating a community of 'winners' that includes all finalists.
