Grant Morrison has written some of the greatest comics ever, but beyond their X-Men and Superman tales, these little-read gems are worth seeking out.
With a 40-year career in comics, Grant Morrison has amassed a rather large body of work. As one of the prime initiates in the “British Invasion” of the American comics market in the 1980s, Morrison’s work has helped to redefine an entire medium from throwaway children’s fare to literary works worthy of academic study.
9 Captain Clyde Morrison was 18 years old when they were hired to produce a superhero strip for the local Scottish newspaper The Govan Press. They would go on to produce 150 episodes, writing and drawing each strip by themselves for three years before it was discontinued. Starting out as a fairly standard superhero story, it wasn’t long before Morrison took the character into darker, more twisted places.
7 The Savage Sword of Jesus Christ While best known these days for their mind-bending superhero epics, there was also a time when Morrison was something of a provocateur, creating works that were designed to disturb and provoke long-held beliefs and sensibilities. The writer returned to their enfant terrible status with this work, produced during Morrison’s tenure as editor-in-chief for Heavy Metal.
5 The Smile of the Absent Cat Another serial from Morrison’s tenure as editor-in-chief of Heavy Metal, The Smile of the Absent Cat uses Louis Wain’s cat cartoons as a starting point to tell a “cat noir” set in Wain’s world of anthropomorphic felines. Featuring intricate artwork from Gerhard, Smile of the Absent Cat is a haunting post-war parable about a decaying society that is adorable only when viewed from the surface.
