Alan Alda is a wonderful actor adept at both comedy and drama. He gained major fame in the 1970s as the lead character on the Korean War TV seriesM*A*S*H, a performance that earned him six Emmys and a Golden Globe. From there, he broadened out into film, playing the lead in several comedies in the 1980s before finding his niche as a supporting player in big projects like The West Wing and The Aviator.
His portrayal of Jack is both humorous and poignant, providing an early glimpse at his range. Much of the emotion is also provided by the fantastic Vivaldi soundtrack Although not that well-remembered now, The Four Seasons was a pretty big hit in 1981, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing-movie of the year. It remains worth watching now, especially for fans of Alda.
The movie itself is far from perfect but Alda is fantastic. He brings a ton of gravitas to the part, even though he's also vain and a bit of a showoff. In other words, he makes the character inspiring yet complex and believable. He has the film's best scene, where he makes emotive arguments before the Supreme Court about the importance of journalism to democracy. It's a good speech, channeling major And Justice For All energy.
5 'Marriage Story' Directed by Noah Baumbach "Getting divorced with a kid is one of the hardest things to do." Marriage Story is Noah Baumbach's phenomenally heart-wrenching portrait of a tumultuous divorce. Once again, Alda plays a lawyer, this time appearing as Bert Spitz, an empathetic and somewhat disheveled attorney who represents Adam Driver's character, Charlie, during the contentious custody battle.
4 'The Aviator' Directed by Martin Scorsese "My investigation has turned up a lot of dirt. It could be really embarrassing if this stuff got out." This biopic chronicles the life of aviation pioneer, filmmaker, and renowned eccentric Howard Hughes . In particular, The Aviator delves into Hughes' groundbreaking achievements and his struggles with mental illness.
3 'Bridge of Spies' Directed by Steven Spielberg "The man is a spy. The verdict is correct and there's no reason to appeal it." Another historical drama, Bridge of Spies follows lawyer James B. Donovan , who is tasked with negotiating the exchange of captured American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel .
