Star Trek: The Next Generation's attempt at social commentary in this season 1 episode didn't work even in 1988, but it aged even worse.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1 struggled to find its footing, and while some episodes showed glimpses of the greatness that was to come, others, like this infamous episode, aged particularly poorly. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the USS Enterprise-D, TNG would go on to produce some of the best science fiction television of all time.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Angel One" sees the Enterprise visit a planet governed by an oligarchy of women, with the men in positions of servitude. Commander William Riker leads an away team to the planet to inquire about survivors from a freighter that went missing years before. The leader of Angel One, Beata seems reluctant to share information with the Enterprise crew, but she is clearly intrigued by Commander Riker.

Captain Picard makes the suggestion that Counselor Deanna Troi be the one to open a dialogue with the people of Angel One, which does not make much sense and feels somewhat patronizing. And then after they arrive on the planet, Riker does most of the talking anyway. Counselor Troi and Lt. Tasha Yar both accompany Riker on the away mission, but they have little to do other than laugh at the ridiculous outfit Riker wears to fit in with the locals.

Angel One Is A Step Back After Episodes Like The Big Goodbye and Datalore TNG season 1 had a notoriously chaotic writer's room and, according to The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years, "Angel One" in particular was plagued by numerous behind-the-scenes problems. The story changed significantly from the first pitch to the final draft, and filming even had to be delayed at one point because the script was not yet finished.

Preceded by the incredibly fun "The Big Goodbye" and the compelling "Datalore," "Angel One" feels like a significant step backward. TNG season 1 had just started to find its footing and step out from the shadow of Star Trek: The Original Series, but the plot of "Angel One" makes use of some of the worst TOS cliches.
