Another death was reported in Illinois, health officials said.
One person died in New Jersey as part of a multi-state Listeria outbreak that has initially been linked to sliced deli meats, health officials announced Friday.
Of the 18 people able to be interviewed, 16 reported eating meats sliced at a deli, most commonly deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst, and ham, authorities said. Products sold at the deli, especially those sliced or prepared at the deli, can be contaminated with Listeria, which canListeria, a bacteria, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Healthy people may only suffer short-term symptoms, but a Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the agency said.
