A head-on crash on Interstate 70 near the Utah border killed at least one person Monday morning, according to Colorado State Patrol.

A tan Subaru Outback driving east on westbound I-70 crashed into a white Ford F-150 just west of Loma at about 11:36 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the agency. The Subaru then slid down an embankment, rolled and caught fire, according to the release. The driver of the Subaru, a 32-year-old woman from Colorado Springs, died at the scene of the crash, state patrol officials said. She will be identified by the Mesa County Coroner’s Office.
The 40-year-old man driving the Ford and his five passengers — a 32-year-old woman, a 13-year-old whose gender was not specified, a 10-year-old girl and two passengers of unknown ages and genders — were all taken to the hospital with “serious” injuries, state patrol officials said in a Monday night update. None of the Ford occupants have been publicly identified. The crash closed westbound I-70 near mile marker 4 for roughly five hours.
It reopened shortly before 4:40 p.m. Monday, according to the state patrol. The state patrol’s vehicular crimes unit is investigating the crash. Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash is asked to contact investigators at 970-249-4392.
